Elk Pass to Elk Lakes Cabin
12.5 km one way via Fox Creek
2oo m elevation gain
For this trip we checked out the closes backcountry cabin to cowtown. The ACC’s Elk Lakes Cabin in Elk Lakes Provincial Park in BC.
Given the option of heading to Elk Pass Cabin along the endlessly boring hydroline trail in Peter Lougheed Park, we chose to follow Fox Creek to the Pass which was much more satisfying. After taking a quick break at the pass we crossed over from the groomed trails of Alberta into the BC back country of Elk Lakes Provincial park. We followed the hydro line for a while before veering off along small switchbacks that offer great downhills with intense corners. We arrived at the hut frozen at sunset. It never was warmer that -24 C.
Known as the “Little O’Hara” and with good reason. Crystalline lakes, glacial shrouded peaks, ancient BC forest. Although not as many options for day tours. Check out Upper Elk Lake, which is superb.
